Hello Friends, How are you today? If you celebrated Easter …. a belated Happy Easter to you and I hope you all had a lovely weekend with sunny skies with lots of crafty times.
Today I have two cards and a video to share with you today for my “Inspire Me Monday” feature on the Power Poppy blog.
Who doesn’t love a peony and this “Peony Muse” stamp set is drop dead gorgeous plus I love that there are coordinating die cuts … that’s a double woo hoo. Sometimes you might not have the die cut or might not have time to color more than one bloom … if that’s the case put a stem on it.
Watercoloring doesn’t come easy for me and I recorded my process in case you are curious. If you just want to watch my watercoloring unfold please watch … if you are looking for proper instruction … it’s not that kinda of video.
When I was finished with the watercoloring I used a white colored pencil and a purple pencil to add some detail and to soften the tips of the petals (with the white) … I am always searching for what I call that “sweet spot”. To balance the large bloom I felt I needed one of the lovely sentiments from the stamp set. I also added a small bow with some twine for the finishing touch.
This peony was colored with pencils only and I felt this one was best without a sentiment. I colored this one while I was traveling and it took a lot longer. I fussy cut a skinny stem and the bloom and used some foam tape to pop it on my card.
Layers and layers of lines with pencils is the way I like to add color with pencils. I am sure you might be wondering what brand of pencils I recommend? I really don’t have a favorite … the only thing I favor is a very sharp tip & I continually sharpen the tip while I am coloring.
Marcella’s illustrations always have beautiful detailed lines that guide you where to add darker pencil highlights. Thanks Marcy!!
Almost finished here. I used a beige ink to stamp the peony and … any lightly colored ink will do. I like to add some dark brown, navy or black to color in the nooks and crannies.
Here is a close up of both. So next time you are coloring a flower think about putting a stem on it. Have a great week and thanks for your visit today and wishing you a great start to your week. Hugs,Kathy

I love both of your peonies! The coloring is magnificent! I also want to respond to something you quoted Jennifer McGuire as saying: always share your work because someone will like it. Well, I don’t really disagree with that but I’d also like to add that someone will always LEARN from your work, and I always learn something new from watching you work! Thanks!

Your video process was fun to watch but you are way too hard on yourself. Other people want to aspire to create to your level! Both of the cards are lovely. I love that you try new products – it helps me decide if I really “need” new products 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration – you are truly blessed with talent!

The watercolouring is gorgeous! I know what you mean though because we don’t know what you had in your mind that you wanted it to turn out like. I’m self taught also. I have so many unfinished because they started to go in a different direction from what I pictured. I should have finished them for the practice.
The pencil crayon idea is brilliant! That’s fabulous for bringing back brights and edges. I really needed that tip. I did have trouble with coloured wetting water until someone told me about the second water cup for rinsing your brush in. You might not have meant it to be a tutorial but you helped me!

These are amazing stamps, I can’t wait for my peonies to pop open! I got very excited this year: my pink azaleas in the front yard completely bloomed on Good Friday, and then yesterday I went out the back door to find my irises had bloomed (on Easter Sunday!) I don’t usually notice these things, but this year it seemed they just fully opened up overnight! Love these–play on. Like I say, if you hate it when it’s done, it will make a lovely grocery list. And you will never figure out new stuff if you don’t play–so feel free to share process videos! I still learn things…every single time!

Hi Kathy, Hope you had a nice Easter. Your cards are BEAUTIFUL. I LOVE watching your watercoloring videos, I think they are awesome and I am trying to learn from them. I had purchased all my items you used a long time ago but have not had the nerve to try it in the last 2 color challenges but this last color challenge I finally got the nerve to try it, but wow it was terrible!! I did post it hoping to get honest feed back but got none, guess no one wants to hurt feelings, but I did ask for honest suggestions and feedback since it was my 1st time I expected a bunch of it was horrible but… comments. Oh well, I am just going to keep watching your videos and maybe try again. I don’t know why it is so hard for me, I love coloring with copics and I picked that up right away, did you find watercoloring hard when you first learned? Anyways, I love how your mind always thinks “outside of the box” like with the stem, such a GREAT idea, loved that, and then so adorable to think to fussy cut on the next one, it really pops. You inspire me Kathy always, thanks for that.

Beautiful colouring, Kathy! Love both of them. I loved your analogy about cooking – it really hit home to me. We’re so critical of ourselves and have to realize that every creation we make serves as practice to improve our craft. I always love watching your videos!

These are beautiful. I love watching your images evolve. The colors on both are perfect and the white pencil makes them almost jump off the page. Adding the purple, which I felt was not too dark, gave so much depth to the one. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

KATHY……………..you kept saying you didn’t know what you were doing and not to watch if we wanted instructions on how to paint. You silly girl! Your painting was so MARVELLOUS!!!! You know exactly where to put the colour and how to highlight and shade. The video was perfect to show me what to do. I am SO IMPRESSED!! Your highlighting and shading with pencils were fantastic.
Your coloured pencil flower is another beauty. Your pencil work is always out of this world. LOVE that you added a single stem. These cards are works of art indeed.
Thank you for all you have taught me and continue to do.
Hope you had a blessed Easter.
