Hello Friends, How’s your week been so far? One more day until the weekend. Yay!
I am super excited to welcome you to Altenew’s August Release Blog Hop!! It’s a happy day because I can share these 36 Pan Watercolors from Altenew! Yes please! But, wait there’s more in this release …watercolor brushes (fine, medium, large) and watercolor palettes (medium, large) plus promotions and giveways!! Let’s get started!
To start at the beginning of the hop go to the Altenew Card Blog. If you are arriving from Lydia Fiedler ‘s blog you are in the right place. Lydia is the real deal and knows her stuff and she always makes me laugh. You will find the full hop list at the bottom of my post.
When I received the new watercolors I packed them and they went on a trip to Hawaii with me and I was able to mess around and play. I watercolored this “Peony Spray” and enjoyed painting the flowers just for the fun of it.
Here’s a little bit more about this beautiful set of 36 vibrant watercolor half-pans. It’s pretty awesome that they coordinate perfectly with the Altenew line of ink. They are intensely pigmented, fade minimally when drying, and some colors have lovely granulating effects. They are stored in a light weight plastic case, with space for your brush (included) and a palette in the lid for mixing. (Some of the case lids snap off upon opening and can easily snap back on after you are finished creating so you can store your mixed paints with the rest of the pan colors).
The most import part of these watercolor is that they fade minimally. Have you watercolored before and the colors are nice and vibrant and then it dries and the color is lost it’s vibrancy? That’s what I love about these the fade is minimal.
I love everything about this 36 pan set of watercolors and I have been enjoying traveling with them because they are not only pretty but, light, compact and the colors are vibrant and rich. For today’s post I decided to create an art piece for my guest bedroom instead of a card.
You can see my watercolor hanging on the wall in the guest bedroom with some of my daughters grade school art that I still treasure even tho she’s 23. I was lucky that I was able to repurpose a frame from about 20 years ago for my contribution to this wall collage. Have you made anything to decorate your walls? I highly recommend it and the extra time is so worth it. Watch the video to see my process.
Watercoloring something this large can be time consuming so I recommend doing it in stages so it can dry in between. When it was partially dry I would stick the painting under a heavy book to flatten it out before adding my next layer of color.
This large background stamp from Altenew is from a collection called, “Pattern Play” . Each one of these stamps can create dynamic yet easy backgrounds. There is the “Diamond“, (that you see today) there is a “Circle” stamp and “Hexagon” stamp. One of my all time favorites stamps for an art piece is this “Mega Succulent“. (You can find two of my Mega Succulent previous posts here & here)
The “Diamond” stamp was stamped two times to make it 10.5 inches long. The paper I used was Arches cold pressed 140 lb and the ink that I stamped with was Spun Sugar distress ink. I gave my misti a rest and used the stamp platform to make the stamping seamless. If you don’t know about the platform … there aren’t sides on the platform it’s easy to stamp in the middle of a large piece of paper. (My paper measures 15.5 x 71/4)
Some of the diamonds were glazed to add more depth and in my video I explain how do do that easily. I decided to only glaze some diamonds for interest instead of all of the diamonds. Once my watercoloring was completely dry I traced around the circles between the diamonds and added small lines at each intersection or the lines coming off of the circles. This extra step was so worth the time. You can see the difference it makes at the top of the paper where the tip of my marker is and compare it to the other dots.
It’s never easy to get a good photo with all these reflections but, hopefully this does the trick. I hope I was able to convince you to create some art for your home.

What a great tutorial and art piece! This would also make a lovely background on a card 🙂
I love this Kathy! I swear, you could make an art piece from a plastic bag! Seriously, I KNOW you could!!! This looks beautiful. I am so excited that Altenew has extended their product line to water colours and w/c accessories. They are beautiful colours. (This in itself is another reason to have Waffle Flowers newest release! ACK! Gotta have THAT too!)
Beautifully done as always!
I want your artwork in my craft center! Just beautiful! Thank you for sharing your inspiration and tips!
What a beautiful piece of art! Love the selective glazing, it adds so much interest. Gorgeous colors and the black marker makes such an impact. Fabulous!
WOW!! Your artwork is stunning. I love the look of watercolor but the execution has always been poor. And I took classes in college!! I tend to paint to dark-being too impatient to want to do layers!!
Fantastic work!! I love the diamond pattern! 🙂
Love all the wonderful tips you share with us on how to make this watercolouring really “pop”. Very pretty piece, and looks great in the frame.
Your artwork is a nice compliment to the artwork by your daughter in your guest bedroom. Thanks for all the paint info and also about the case and the ink not fading once you are done painting with it. Good tips to know!

Love the patchwork “quilt”. There is so much
dimension to the “bubbles” — looks like you

Thanks so much for sharing…
Kathy, you never fail to inspire me! Love that diamond pattern.
Your art piece is so lovely! The added glaze to some of the diamonds is perfect!
Fabulous and inspiring, great work!
Wow! Amazing piece of art! I love how you used a very basic pattern stamp and let the colors really take the artwork to another level. Beautiful work!
I love how this turned out! What a great idea to continue the pattern. I think too literally most of the time and would stick to 6×6 just because that is the size of the stamp. I made some art for my house 12 years ago when we had this one built but haven’t done anything since. I was actually just thinking the other day that I was in the mood for a change as my tastes in crafts and painting are so different now. Guess I have my inspirational kick in the butt now!!!
Your ideas stretch my imagination. The colors are fabulous.
Wow! Your art piece is beautiful.
So, so beautiful, Kathy; Thanks for sharing your technique making this watercolour piece of art! It is gorgeous matted and framed, hanging on the wall,

Beautiful work…always like to learn something from you.!
Beautiful piece of artwork. The little circles between the diamonds add so much.

what a great piece of art you painted for your guest room! putting these watercolors on my wish list!
Love this beautiful colored flowers…and the diamonds too.
Your Diamond design art piece is really very lovely! The colors you chose really go very nicely together!
I am having so much trouble with this hop. Look how close you are to the top of the list, and now I have something else to inspire me! I love the simplicity of this, but it it not flat or boring. Genious as an art piece. I have been wanting to play with colors for a few days now, but I am already overloaded with new ideas. Maybe I will combine yours and Kristina’s and do some color mix swatching in a repetitive pattern such as this!!! Thank you so much. This is lovely-beautifully balanced, rich with color and depth.
Love the way you watercolour and the wall art is so different and just shows how versatile these paints are…. Now just have to wait for my set to arrive.
Your purple peony is stunning! Your wall art piece is amazing and I agree the last step of adding the black lines around the dots does really bring it all together. What a great way to showcase these watercolors. TFS with us.
Oh wow, this is just stunning

Just lovely! When I grow up I want to color just like you!! I love the colors of this palette.
What a fun art piece! Love your color selection!
Kathy what a gorgeous piece you created using the new watercolours! Now I want to do the same! Amazing how adding the black lines after it was all dry makes those diamonds look some dimensional! Love it!

Beautiful piece of art! I love the idea of creating art for the home. Someday I will challenge myself. Thanks for sharing your video.
I really enjoyed watching you go through the coloring process of the diamonds. The watercolors seem to have a life of their own when done in fashion. One at a time, they became vibrantly beautiful! Thank you for the sharing of this technique and inspiration.
Love your art!
Terrific projects and I especially love the home decor piece – beautiful!
That is an amazing hanging – such patience to do! Hope I can achieve something like it some day.
Love how that turned out, Kathy. I actually thought you sketched it. What a great idea for a stamp!
What a cool piece of art. Totally inspired now!
Really pretty, I like it hung either way so you defiantly have a winning piece of artwork there. Thanks for all the advice, tips & ideas, very much needed. Haven’t done any work for my new home since we’ve moved here, about time I think.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful projects. These watercolors look like fun.
Awesome creation!
I love the art piece. Not sure if I would have the patience to create something like this but the end result would be worth it.
Super cool art piece Kathy!
I love your art piece, the colors sing to me.
I love the watercolour set! The colours are so vibrant yet subtle. Would love to recreate your artwork with these watercolours! The artwork looks so meditative and peaceful, Thanks for the inspiration!
Oh my goodness! This is absolutely amazing, Thanks so much for the video! I just had my young teenage grandaughters for a week. They made 10+ 7 1/2 X 11 inch watercolor backgrounds, (mainly washes and drippage) Then wrote inspirational quotes on them. We went to see the new Christopher Robin movie & of course there were a couple of Pooh quotes too.
The new watercolours are gorgeous. And I love the beautiful inspiration! It reminds me of a silk quilt.
I love that you did an art piece! It is beautiful!! You always inspire us to stretch and push our imagination.
Kathy, I can see why that beautiful art piece you created would be time consuming. Looks so simple, but… I think it’s cool you still have some of your daughters art on the wall. 🙂
That is one complaint I have about watercolours is that they fade so much. To hear that these have rich pigments is great. I’d love to be able to order them.
Your art piece is awesome and so are these new watercolors!!!
Thanks for the review and I like what you created.
What a beautiful piece of artwork you created! The inspiration from this group is amazing!
So beautiful! Great inspiration!
Amazing! I love it!
I love this background stamp and now I have a fun new way to use it. Thanks!
Your art piece is beautiful.
You definitely have inspired me! Your art piece is gorgeous. I love to make cards, but I make so many more than I can ever use. The thought of making an art piece never occurred to me, but it would be a perfect way to indulge my paper crafting addiction into something I could hang on the wall.
STUNNING PIECE!!!! TFS
Thanks for the wonderful info! That piece is stunning!
Love your art piece! The colors are so beautiful!
This is so pretty! Love the bold colors!
What fun! I’m definitely giving this a try. Thanks for the instructions.
I normally would not be brave enough to attempt art for my house, but I might just give it a try now! Thank you for the step by step tutorial!
What a great decorator piece. I love the vibrancy of these watercolours.
Love your work here Kathy. So lovely. You have inspired me to make more things for the home. I am on it. 🙂
I have to say your painted flower samples are just stunning, but the framed artwork blew me away! Artist quality indeed!
Thanks for the video and all the tips. Your flowers are beautiful and I love the wall piece.
I love watercolors and am so excited Altenew has come out with a set, and the accessories!
OMG, fabulous art piece and yes, vibrant! The finishing touch of the brown marker truly help intensify the vibrancy and added depth, it looks quilted because of the added glazing. I can’t wait to see what you do with the Peony’s you colored on your vacation, they’re gorgeous!!!
How fabulous are you, Kathy! Your colors are always amazing!
Hi Kathy! The peony sprays you watercolored are drop dead gorgeous and I really like the art piece you did for your guest room. It has a quilted braided look about it 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
These are pretty! 🙂
These bold vibrant colours are just gorgeous on your projects. Thanks for the encouragement to us beginners.
This is so amazing, Kathy! Love it!
I watercolored my first piece of wall art while on a river cruise in Germany. One of our excursion choices was to visit an artist in her studio and paint under her guidance. We had a choice of images she had pre-sketched and I chose a type of Kingfisher. You have now inspired me to take a few of my adult childrens’ work from years gone by and frame it for my walls as they have both passed away and it would be great conversation starters with wonderful memories. Bless you! And I love all the art pieces on your wall.
That piece of art is very pretty. I will have to watch your video to
See what the glazing is about. Thanks
This is such a gorgeous piece! I love that it’s framed and hung up!
Can’t wait to try these beautiful colors! Love your framed piece!
