It’s amazing to me that Altenew is only 4 years old and it’s been so rewarding watching them grow as a company. It was only fitting to create a Birthday card to celebrate this milestone for Altenew using this happy little guy from the “Hug Me” stamp set & coordinating die cut.
Watercoloring with distress ink was a fun way to start my card. The full card die is great for a background is called “Half Tone” & I think it’s so versatile but, I chose to use it in a more subtle way on my card. I cut the “birthday” part of the sentiment by hand to pop it on the letters.
When my watercoloring dried I added some highlights with a white pencil on the balloons. I am so in love with these “Brushed Alpha Dies” and I have been itching to color some twine and thread it through one of the letters. Mission accomplished!
Another large stamp is the Mega Succulent that I am in love with. This is my second “painting” that I have done with this stamp. Check out this post here to see the my previous painting.
The last time I colored this mega succulent it was in green tones with a more realistic look … so this time I was going for a more artsy look or something with some pink in it lol.
Time wasn’t on my side so I was unable to film a video but, I do have video of the same mega succulent I watercolored in this video here. The distress inks I used were this and this for my first layer of color.
When my first two layers were dry I added some abandon coral ink.
Adding a tad of lucky clover on the center of each petal added some interest.
To finish off the pink accents I used this & this.
I added a line of lucky clover on each petal. When my painting was dry I popped it in a frame. My twin sister is moving and I thought this might be a nice house warming gift.
Ahhh this Arabesque Medallion stamp is sooo fun to color or watercolor. I love the scale of the stamp & that it’s large .. so you can put it in a frame for a gift for someone special. I framed this same stamp in a previous post … if you want to check that one out click here.
Using Tombow watercolor markers I find images super easy to watercolor. It’s hard for me not to futz and putz when I am “finished”. Once my image is dry I like to add lines and dots with a gel pen and these.
I also added little eyelash lines in colors around the perimeter and one the inside of the image. Cutting out the medallion was pretty easy … the last time I cut the medallion out I traced it to make the cutting part even simpler.

I have to look into that Stamp…
I tend to shy away from large stamps, especially if they have large areas for coloring. I am learning how to blend and mix colors, but am not great at it. You, on the other hand, are obviously very adept at it! The succulent and the medallion look gorgeous, even though they are so different.

What fabulous designs! I really love that succulent! They are my favorite plants so this stamp is on my must have list.
I love the first birthday one. I love balloons and I love colorful ones, except I wish there was a yellow balloon. Oh well, that’s neither here nor there. I love how you did that background with the holes. I was thinking I could do this with a circle punch but then I realized it wouldn’t go all the way across the paper. Darn it! I’d love to try it but not until I can get a die cutter and who knows when that will be?
I can’t believe Altenew is 4 years old either. I thought they were even newer that’s how much I know. A lot of these companies seem new to me especially with the internet. I never knew how many companies there were until I got a computer.
Your succulent card? I’m not a fan. Can I tell you why? It reminds me of mushrooms! The first time I saw it that’s what I thought of, mushrooms. I know what succulents are, we had some in our house when we had a plant table in our living room. I just wasn’t a fan. Sorry.
Now the Medallian stamp I love! That is such a cool stamp! I love how you framed it and gave it to your twin sister. I didn’t know you had a twin! Cool! I did that once. I colored snowflakes from a snowflake coloring book, framed them and gave them as Christmas gifts. Everyone loved them and it was a personal gift like yours was. I would have used a lot more colors then you did but then that’s just me. I like it all the same.

The birthday card is very cute and I love the white details on it, live the succulent and it is a great gift idea. But my favorite is the medallion. I love the little eyelash lines that you drew.
