Hellllooo Friends! How are you today? I am thrilled to be heading to Junkie Fest with the Stamp Junkies this weekend to teach. Super excited! I will do my best to keep up with the 30 day coloring challenge and I really hope I get to see some of you guys.
Brown is a color that can transform your coloring but, it’s scary to add it. Check out the video below to see how Gathered Twigs takes my watercoloring up a notch. These Spring Peonys are from Honey Bee stamps not only are they beautiful but, great for watercolor because the petals are nice and open.
What do you think about the Gathered Twigs? Do you think it transformed my blooms?
Ack I don’t have a photo before I started painting the brown but, you can get the idea in this photo. Two of the peony’s have been painted with gathered twigs. The bright blue flower is how they all looked before I painted the distress ink. My initial watercoloring was done with Tombow markers. I also added brown to the yellow leaves.
Once everything was dry I stamped the sentiment and wrapped vellum around the card base. LOVE these sentiments from Honey Bee and the size of the font is perfect for larger size cards.
Peony’s don’t have a red center but, it’s fun to color them.

This is beautiful! That brown really does make a positive difference. And I like the red centers too – it is art and they are flowers, so anything goes!
Kathy Racoosin says
I’m happy that you like them! Yes, in art, anything goes 🙂
Teresa Doyle says
WOW, I totally would have never thought to use brown on a flower. Scary? Hell YEAH! LOL
Kathy Racoosin says
Teresa, once upon a time, I would not have either! But I continue to learn from uber-talented colorists…I love the tones the browns add 🙂
Sheri Kempke says
I love this addition of the distress ink–amazing difference. I will have to be brave and try this, I’ve been coloring but have been in Birthday card making and sending off, I take the photos but haven’t had time to post. Thanks for hosting this cool event and teaching. Enjoy MN–my homeland, which I left over 30 years ago.
Kathy Racoosin says
Hi, Sheri! I hope you have time to post your recent creations…and perhaps add some brown to whatever you might be working on. Thanks for the well-wishes for my MN trip 🙂
Henriëtte says
I love the flowers with the brown and yes, it has transformed your blooms.
I also love the bright blue colour you had before you added brown. I see nothing more of that colour after adding the brown, I am a bright colour girl (LOL). I think that’s a bit of a shame. But I will give it a try to add brown to my water colour.
Thank you for your post, have a great teaching weekend, see you tomorrow.
Happy colouring.
Kathy Racoosin says
Hi Henriette! I remember when blue and brown were a popular color combo back in the early 2000s; I thought it odd, but came to love it and I still do. Funny how getting out of our comfort zone can lead to new likes…or disasters LOL 🙂

Rosali B. says
Your shading looks absolutely amazing!!! I so need to be more brave when it comes to using colors for shadows! Thanks for inspiring me to always try something new when coloring. <3
Julie Booker says
WOW! All I can say is what a difference adding that brown to your colouring made! So beautiful. I don’t know if I would have the confidence to do what you do to your work. Sometimes I get so little time set aside to colour that I don’t think that I would have risked adding brown to any watercolouring. Of course, now I’m going to have to try it.
Teri Spracklin says
What gorgeous blooms! I think I need to put Junkie Fest on my bucket list. 🙂
Avra N Williams says
I just love that blue color!
Gilda says
Definitely nothing to do with your fabulous coloring but not really a fan of the brown. However, love the absolutely beautiful flowers and use of the vellum for the sentiment.
