Hello Friends. Welcome to DAY ONE of the 14th coloring challenge, “The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge” OMG I can’t believe it’s DAY ONE!!! YIPEEE!! I am so excited you are here and that so many of you are taking the challenge again! Thank YOU and thank you all for your comments, enthusiasm and for taking the challenge!!!! If you are new this go around or have been watching from the side lines and decided to jump in I am so proud of you for taking some “me” time. My mantra has always been to find just 10 minutes a day to color and watch the stress of the day melt away.
If this is your first time don’t be hard on yourself and jump in when time permits. If you have any questions about the coloring challenge you can refer to this post . If you want to get my posts in your mailbox you can sign up here or subscribe to my videos here.
For Day 1. I like to do something a little out of the ordinary and the rest of the challenge I won’t have the luxury of time and it will be back to business as usual lol.
STENCILS! Yes get out your stencils I have a fun new way for you to use them. I feel like I am channeling Jennifer McGuire Ink. Man I don’t know how she does it. Four cards is so hard but, the coloring is super easy and FUN! Watch in new video in HD here.
ALL OF MY CARDS TODAY ARE CREATED WITH MINIMAL SUPPLIES.
This beautiful stencil, “Stellar Snowflake” is from Gina K. Designs and it’s only $6.99. Because of the size it sure packs a punch! Most of you know that I love the Copic color E50 and Gina’s ink is as awesome as E50. It’s the perfect color as an underpinning just like E50 is.
All you need to do is ink it up the stencil on some watercolor paper and you are ready to go. Painting your stencil is not only fun but, you get more color variation and the look of a stamped image for a lot less money.
This “Triangle Blast” stencil is from Simon Say Stamp and it’s perfect for those men and boys in our life. This stencil is only $6.99 and is sooo versatile. For this stencil I went heavier with the ink on one side. When I painted this I ran out of time and you don’t even miss the color because the ink is that fabulous.
This card is B.I.G. & dramatic and will make the recipient feel special because of the size and weight. I hope you try this technique it’s honestly so relaxing to color. In my video you will see that I added glossy accents to parts of my watercoloring. Use whatever medium you have but, for me I grabbed some Tombow markers. The “Miss You Block” die is just the right scale & I like that it’s chunky and don’t have to fiddle with it.
It’s nice to have wintery-holiday cards with some basic needed sentiments.
Experimenting with this new technique, trying different mediums and enjoying each and every way. For my second card I pulled out the NEW luscious Altenew metallic pan set. (Check out this post to see more of the metallics)
Since texture paste is generally used with stencils I wanted to see how it would look over my watercoloring. It’s cool and it still worked with my old translucent paste. (In the video you can really see the effect)
CARD NUMBER THREE:
This card is the most minimal supplies and coloring. The ink really shines and if you look close you can see only half of each area is colored. This works best with a super sharp pencil. In the center I watercolored just a few details before I realized that I decided on using just pencils for different look.
CARD NUMBER FOUR:
This card looks like I spent more time on then I really did. Inking Triangle Blast and creating a lighter and darker side really helped for color variation. The watercolor markers I used are these and if you don’t have watercolor markers these are the ones to get.
The Hello die I am so in love with and the size is perfection. A quick wrap of twine was the perfect touch to finish my card. I hope you will find some of your stencils ink them up and color them for something new and different. It’s an excellent way to color on the fly with just a few markers or pencils.
Since this is the first day I want to make mention of something that I think is very important and I like to mention it every challenge … our posture! When coloring take pause and think if you can lift your gaze and straighten you back. Using a clip board helps you prop up your project so you aren’t bending over (you can prop the clip board on a stack of books). I take a clip board on the plane with me and it saves my neck in a good way!
I can not wait to see what you all are coloring. Woo Hoo!!
There are 3 ways to share what you are coloring. If you want to join a community of coloring enthusiasts I recommend FaceBook or Instagram. Be sure to tag me and use the hashtag #thedailymarker30day. Kids & young adults use #thedailymarker30daykids.

Anne Sturgeon says
WOW… You are starting this thing BIG. Love these stencils but I have to say I have not tried the Gina K. inks yet. There are so many companies with their own inks it really makes it hard to buy them all. So beautiful and you did them all proud. Happy 1st day of the 30 day Challenge.
Robyn Oliver says
Happy to be joining in again with your fabulous 30 days of colouring, Kathy… simply love your first day with the stencils – your four cards look amazing and I’m totally inspired – their all gorgeous… whoop whoop lets get colouring… hugs Robyn

. Love them all.
Teresa Doyle says
Kathy cards are wonderful and I am looking forward to doing some ink blending with some stencils and who knows, maybe I’ll even sharpen up a few coloured pencils and try some shading 😉 I agree, posture is important when colouring for any length of time. My brother built my daughter a beautiful drawing table when she went to art school. Now that she doesn’t have room for it she has given it to me to use for colouring and it is awesome.
Gail Plaskiewicz says
I love your cards & how you used your stencils. I have lots of stencils that I have used on fabric but I never used them on a card before. I like how yours came out! I’ll have to dig out the ones I have & use them on a card. I know Jen does & I will too. I tried to post something but it wouldn’t let me. I’m going to try again. I’ve been coloring a lot! You & Jen always come up with such good ideas.
Danielle Vincent says
I love playing with stencils! Thanks for some new ideas on ways to use them. Gorgeous cards!
Glennis F says
Thanks for sharing your lovely cards today, this looks a fun technique to try
KerrynM says
Kathy this is so cool. At the moment I am a bit limited on what I can do, as had surgery on my dominate hand. I saw on Jennifer’s blog awhile ago her using color pencils through stencils so I have been doing a bit of that. It is something I can do with my opposite hand because the stencil stops me going out of the lines. I set it up on the Wendy Vecchi Art station and can move it around or even do a bit and walk away. Love you coloring challenges.
Gabriella Bell says
These cards look beautiful and I enjoyed playing with my stencils for a change

Becky Green says
Hey Kathy! I’ve been thinking right along these lines with stencils! LOL Your cards are BEAUTIFUL! I think the thick embossing paste, taking from the shine of your paints, MIGHT have something to do with the paste or “nature of the beast.” You know how they tell you NOT to rub over glitter once you’ve applied it…..? I think this might be along the same lines with your embossing paste! I DO LOVE how it is CLEAR! I’ll have to look for this kind of embossing paste! I’ve been working away here on Birthday cards, Anniversary, Baby Cards & gifts, at a WHIRL WIND PACE! So, it might take me a bit to get going on the coloring this time! LOL Christmas cards are next on the list to be worked on, so maybe, I’ll just work that into my coloring for your challenge!
Cindi Walsh says

Dear Cathy
A bouquet of thanks for organising the 30 Day Coloring Challennge. As you said it will inspire me to color at least a bit and practice makes perfecion. Aftrr 30 days I will be one step ahead from the place i started. Oh i am so excited.
Your cards are beautiful and i loved the way you had used stencils. Stencils are much cheaper in Sri Lanka compared to stamps and dies.
Thanks a bunch for the tips you share too.
I am joining the 30 Day coloring Challenge from Sunny Sri Lanka and i am so blessed to join you know why? I will get to learn new techniques and methods of coloring. Isn’t that brilliant. I might be the least experienced among you lovely ladies but I am joining as i want to get an honest opinion and improve my coloring.
After you get into the habit of colorfing for 30 days it will be automatic and therefore come what may rain orf sunshine i will join you daily.
As i am a journalist and time is very limited yesterday when i got some time i inked the images in balck in one piece of card stock and kept so that daily i just have to color one flower and make it into a card.
Blessings to you and your family

Those are fabulous stencils! The cards you made using them are fabulous. I went to use my stencils the other day and I’ve misplaced them! It’s doing my head in as I was really inspired to try something different (I don’t use stencils often).
Joyce Boylan says
Lovely idea, though I have too many stamps that haven’t seen ink yet!
Confession: I didn’t color on Day 1 – was feeling down because I hadn’t heard back regarding a job I had interviewed for. Day 2 I dragged myself to a monthly crop and started coloring. My gal pals were there to support me in every way. Coloring also took my mind off of being jobless for three months.
Good news is that I have been coloring everyday since and… I got the job! I’ll have to pack a coloring kit to do during lunch since I’ll be commuting 2 hours/day.
Thank you for hosting this challenge – I know it must be hard work that some folks may take for granted. I appreciate you so very much and maybe next time you can recruit some of your crafty gal pals to special guest so that you have some time for yourself!
Hugs!

What a great start to this challenge. I jumped in a bit late but am starting at the beginning of your posts so I can absorb all the useful information you provide along the way. Love the idea inking through a stencil and then coloring it. Such a great tip and one I will definitely be giving a try along with doing the base inking lighter and darker in spots to create interest. Thanks!
