Hello Friends! Happy Earth Day! It’s Day 8. of the Coloring Challenge and I have something fun for you for Earth Day!
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG (formerly Earth Day Network) including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.
Earth Day will be live streaming events all day. Check it out here.
To do my part I will be doing monthly posts on ways to reuse things in a crafty way to lessen our carbon footprints a little bit.
Can you guess what these colored cylinders are? Well if you read the title of today’s post you know. Save those paper towel rolls. If you don’t use paper towels I bow to you deeply. I try and do my best to lessen my foot print but, I do use those handy paper towels!
It’s so fun to put your stencils to work to decorate the packaging. Once you nail the first one you can make these pretty quickly. I love this beautiful “Painted Flower Wreath stencil” from Simon Says Stamp and the circle shape makes a fun pattern on the cylinder shape. The Island Blue ink is so vibrant and I love it on the bright green tissue paper.
Stuff your paper towel rolls with candy, crafty supplies, cosmetics, nut mix, mini toys, small cookies, gold fish … the sky’s the limit. Use them on a table to brighten it up like I did or stuff some in a bag and hang on your neighbors door for a fun surprise.
*** The solid ones I used as a last minute decision to decorate the table for family brunch so some of the rolls weren’t decorated but, they still were a hit. My mom took a few extra for her friends and they were thrilled.
When I tell you how much fun these were to make I mean it! The hardest part was saving the paper towel rolls.

Don’t forget to ink up your favorite stencil on the tissue paper before stuffing and rolling the paper towel tubes. Simon Says Stamps LARGE 6×9 stencil called, “I Like Small Dots” works beautifully. If you are making a few it would be fun to do different rows of color on the tissue paper with the dot stencil.
Once you have the pattern on the tissue paper flip it over so the pattern is facing down. When you roll the tube the stencil pattern will be on the top.
Fold a piece of tissue paper over. (design facing down) Place a strip of double sided tape or Scor-Tape on the edge of the tissue paper and on the paper towel roll. Remove the backing from the Score-Tape. Roll the paper towel roll so it sticks on the edge of the paper. Proceed to roll until you meet the tape on the opposite end. Tie the ends with ribbon or twine.
This is how I used the paper towel rolls to brighten up my tables for our family brunch.
The pink roll has an extra layer. I put some glittery gel on vellum using the“I Like Small Dots” stencil for an overlay on top of the tissue paper but, that’s an extra step and the beauty of these is to keep it simple and easy.
Thanks for your visit today and I hope you enjoyed this post. I would love to hear if you going try something different or new for Earth Day. See you tomorrow! Hugs, Kathy

Hi, Kathy – What a great idea. I used to give all my TP and PT rolls to a friend whose bird likes to shred them w/ its beak… but I have not been able to see her due to COVID, so this would be an excellent use for them. TFS

Ha! We don’t eat snack foods here and when you said “stuff them with gold fish”. I wondered how happy they would be in there, even for a short time. Seriously, I need to get out more often. Love your idea. Happy Earth Day!

I am a hoarder when it comes to paper rolls of any kind. My granddaughters love to craft and we have used these rolls to contain treats for their classmates and family members whenever we can. Love how you decorated yours and I am definitely going to use this technique. My girls are not afraid to get INKY!! TFS

I like to use empty toilet paper rolls to make the head of a dandelion with tiny cut slits around and down about 1 inch and dab it into paint and paint on a canvas frame. Wonderful videos on You Tube for painting dandelions.

Well, I have only about 2 PT rolls a year, but many more TP rolls, so I’ll be saving them now. I think my mother in an Assisted Living (or perhaps even all the residents!) would treasure this lovely treat. Thanks for the ideas!
