Helllloooo Friends, How was your weekend? I can’t believe it’s day 27!! I am already starting to miss you all, your posts, comments, and INSPIRATION.
It was a super busy weekend … my daughter came home and that meant more cooking and fridge filling lol. Also on Sunday I was lucky enough to attend and teach a “card” at Neat & Tangled first ever event. Not only was it fabulous but, meeting everyone was the icing on the cake. A two hour drive was well worth it.
I will post a video for this later today so please check back. For the Neat & Tangled project that I was responsible for was these beautiful succulents. I decided to color the succulents like a flowers using the “Succulent Journaling Card” stamp and matching die cut.
Showing everyone my copic blending solution and rag technique for some quick coloring was so rewarding.
If you don’t want a large bottle I suggest you start with this. There are only a few days left for Simon Says Stamp 25% off copic sale CODE MARKERSALE.
SEE YOU LATER FOR MY VIDEO.
GIVEAWAY!! ….and what a fun one it is. Shaker card fans rev your engines lol. TWO lucky winners will receive a box of six brand new 28 Lilac Lane sequin mixes. To quality just leave a comment and tell me if you have ever made a shaker card. A random winner will be announced a few days after the challenge.
A super big thank you to May Flaum for making this happen. Thanks May! Read more about May and 28 Lila Lane below.
Thanks for your visit today and a big thanks to May for the Giveaway. See you all tomorrow. Hugs, Kathy
28 Lilac Lane is just over a year old, and it is May’s boutique line produced by Buttons Galore. May picks, designs and puts together all of the mixes and oh how she loves it!!
Here’s some more about how this came about in May’s words:
“Crafting is all about the details for me. From a light splatter of color to a trio of little pearls, a seemingly random scatter of sequins to a cluster of buttons I love adding my own touches to my projects. As a kid, my favorite spot to hunt for treasures was a set of drawers at my grandma’s house. She had everything from vintage costume jewelry pieces to tiny figurines to buttons. Here in my studio, my own set of creative treasure drawers dominate my work desk and it is always my favorite part of the creative process when I get to dig in and search for the perfect finishing touches to whatever I’m making. Scrapbook layouts to mixed media canvases, décor project to playing with the kids I love using the bits & pieces that I’ve collected over the years.
The one item that dominates my collection is buttons. Small or big, fancy or simple, I adore the versatility and universal usability of buttons. When Buttons Galore approached me about working on a line with them, I thought about my creative process and style, and how the details are my favorite part! Thinking about all of my favorite embellishments, and beginning this collection for them has been a true labor of love. I am inspired by all of the colors and happenings in my own world, and I’m excited to bring this collection to you.”
Thanks for reading and I will see you tomorrow.

Mary Holshouser says
I haven’t made a lot of shaker cards but I do like them.
I have plans for a card on the table right now.
It the die cut of the table-top world globe.
The globe will contain parts of a map and
the sequins. The base is made of a wood
grain paper. Have the prototype – now
to get the finished project.
thanks for sharing. It’s been a wonderful
month.
Kathy Racoosin says
Sounds like a wonderful project! 🙂
Andrea Shell says
Beautiful! Yes, I have made shaker cards. It’s been awhile; I think it’s time for one!
Dee Earnshaw says
I love making shaker cards, but I get so frustrated when the sequins inside the panel get stuck to the edges !!! – any suggestions on how to prevent this ????
thanks and HUGS
Kathy Racoosin says
After you’ve got the shaker section completed, the area that will hold the sequins and shaker bits, take your embossing buddy tool (anti static bag or bottle with a brush tip) and cover the edges/sides of the shaker pouch. If you don’t have an embossing buddy you can also use a tiny amount of baby powder. This will remove any stickiness and static and make the shaker bits stick to the edges much less. SOME MAY still stick, but i have noticed it makes a huge difference, especially if you’re using foam tape. Hope this is helpful!

I have made shaker cards; however, I find that I either put too many sequins or too few in. I don’t know until it is put together and then it is too late. There must be a trick?
Kathy Racoosin says
I wish I knew the trick. I think less is more, however I have the same problem too! LOL 🙂
preeti d. says

Mirella ROGAN says

Thanks for the chance to win the wonderful sequins, too, I love making shaker cards and have recently been gifted the fuse tool, so I think there are quite a few shakers in my future
Cynthia Cole says
Love your card! I haven’t made a shaker card yet.
Sharon Traynor says
I have made a few cards in the past and I loved them. However, I cannot easily get my hands on all the lovely shiny beads and sequins where I live now so sadly I am no longer able to make them (sob! sob!)
Absolutely loving your tags Kathy. Those blooms look really delicate and the blue background remind me of beautiful summer days.
Peggy Pride says
I tried to make shaker cards but I always have trouble with the sealing process with foam tape. I guess one of those tools to heat and seal is a solution, but I really would rather learn how to do it the “untechnology” way!
Kathy Racoosin says
A few recommendations using the foam tape….
Be sure that it is around the shaker area completely with no breaks in the barrier where sequins could sqeeze through and fall out.
Use an anti static powder tool, embossing buddy bag or a small amount of baby powder to gently go around the inside edges. This minimizes its stickiness so the sequins don’t stick to the sides.
Use liquid glue adhering to the final card base/project to ensure it won’t fall apart.
Do the foam tape two layers high. This gives more room for the sequins and shaker bits to move around.
Hope this is helpful!
Peggy Pride says
Kathy, you are wonderful to reply to my comments. I will try your suggestions and then send you a “good” result when I master it. You are so kind but even more creative! I so look forward to your posts! Thanks for the inspiration.

Jennifer Lubinsky says
I have made them before but not often. I love the look but it is so much work. I don’t have s lot of time to craft so I tend to do quicker cards. I do love sequins though. I was thinking of getting the fuse tool and that may make it a lot easier.
Kathy Racoosin says
The Fuse tool definitely cuts down on time but I must admit, the shaker bits and sequins don’t move around as much because they lack the depth that is given with the foam tape. Two different looks though and both fun. 🙂
Jennifer Lubinsky says
Oh jeez. good point. I wasn’t thinking of that. Thank you so much. Hmm. I may stick to the good ole fashion hard work. Thanks again for the tip.

Debbie Tester says
One year I made shaker cards for all my Christmas cards. The ones I mailed close by survived fine, but those who lived states away….cold states away, the sticky must have frozen and all the stuffins’ came out in the envelopes. I hope they just thought it was my Christmas confetti as I put stars or hearts in all my cards. I also had to pay a LOT of extra postage to send my “Broken” Christmas greetings. Long story short, If I decide to make them again, I’ll be mailing my Christmas cards out in March or October. LOL
Kathy Racoosin says
I recommed adding a tiny bit of liquid adhesive to the sticky sides of the foam if you do it again. This way, they wont go anywhere with dried liquid glue there. Sorry to hear that happened to you.
Donna Rinckel says
I’ve tried a shaker card once or twice but wasn’t very successful. The sequins and other things always stuck to the sides so I obviously didn’t do it correctly. But I know thatI’ll try it again and hopefully get it right eventually. I knwo there are tons of great tutorials out there to help. Gorgeous tag. Looking forward to the video! Have an awesome week.
Kathy Racoosin says
If you treat the sides (on the inside of the shaker compartment) with your embossing buddy poweder tool, or a tiny bit of baby powder, this will reduce the amount that stick to the inside edges. Hopefully this is helpful.
Susie Sonnier says
Love to make shaker cards because my friends love the interactive function

I have made shaker cards. I have so much trouble with the static cling that I don’t enjoy making them. It is easier for me to make them in reverse order, maybe that’s a left handed thing? I just bought my first pair of left handed scissors, can’t wait to get them.
Kathy Racoosin says
I recommend using an embsossing buddy powder tool on the inside of the shaker compartment. This will reduce the static cling significantly.
Lindar C says
yes, I did try that after several frustrating attempts. Now I add a little powder to my sequin mixes before I transfer them into storage containers 🙂
Heidi says
I love sequins but I have never made a shaker card, it always seems to much to put so many sequins on one card, I can’t part with that many shiny sparkly things in one go
Kathy Racoosin says
LOL. It has to be a card for someone super special with all those pretties inside! 🙂 LOL
stampfoldandrepeat says

I’ve made some fun shaker cards. I buy fun foam from Joann’s and re-use acrylic sheets from stamp sets I buy. My favorite was filling a shaker with plumbing parts for my FILs b-day, he’s a retired plumber and he loved it!
Kathy Racoosin says
What a fabulous idea for a masculine shaker card! Love it!
Marianne says
What a fun technique, Kathy. It’s also perfect if you only have a few colours, because it doesn’t require extensive blending. Cannot wait to give this ago.
I have already created 2 shaker cards this year, both of the them Christmas-themed.
Would love to win some of May’s mixes. Thanks for the chance.

BunnyD says
What a beautiful effect the overlaid die has on the tag! I always find something new with you! And I just received notice of a Copics shipment on its way while I was watching the video! Woohoo! I’m going to need a new carry bag! I love adding sequins to cards now. A touch of happy!
Lynne Ingram says
Yes, I have made shaker cards but struggle to be successful. They are so much fun when they turn out right and the sequins don’t get stuck.
Kathy Racoosin says
Try preparing the inside of the shaker area with the embossing magic powder tool (or a little bit of baby powder if you dont have the tool). Get the edges especially good. This will dramatically reduce the static and stickiness of the sides of the foam tape and the sequins won’t stick as much. Some may stick but definitely much less.
Lynda says
Fascinated at how you use the rag to create texture. I keep forgetting to try it. Thanks for showing it again.
Lynette says
I have tried shaker cards, but haven’t quite got them completely figured out yet. 🙂 I will need to revisit them soon!

I made some shaker cards in my early days of cardmaking (before foam tape and all the other things that make them much easier), but haven’t made one for a while. I have some seed beads set aside to make one or more, but some pretty sequins would be a lovely touch.
QUESTION ABOUT YOUR COLORING ON TODAY’S CARD: I don’t have Copics, but I noticed you only colored a few petals with the darkest color before moving on the medium color and then the blender. Is there a time-sensitive component to how long the Copics can sit before you blend them? Thanks, as always for your dedication to your readers and your craft. As my Dad used to say, “You haven’t had a failure yet.” 😉
Kathy Racoosin says
Not really Lucy. You can blend after letting Copics sit for a year, however it might take a littel more time and work. Personally, I find it easiest and fastest to go petal by petal (or a few petals) at a time….but it really is a personal preferance.

I love shaker cards, but mine always look so clunky. I need to practice more, but I do love them. I haven’t made one yet to give away, but hope to soon. I really like your tag and technique! It turned out so pretty!

I have made a few shaker cards, mostly for my grandkids. I made a few with those wobble things, but the kids just tore them off. The shaker cards work better since the kids are so little now. And they love them!!

I LOVED the coloring of the succulents. I love the untraditional colors you used for them. I attempted a several-layer Christmas ornament for the first time I made a Shaker ornament. After several hours, and ripping things off and putting other things back on, the Shaker ornament actually looked really good. It featured the Nativity creche scene, with extra lambs and sheep. I would love to win some of those sequin mixes from Lilac Lane, since I could use some new colors.

OOOhhh, those sequin mixes are adorable! I love shaker cards, but I have to admit that so far I’ve only ever made two. They were for two kids’ birthdays last year, and I made a boy pirate and a girl pirate version. They turned out pretty cute, if I may say so myself 😉 I should really make more, it was so much fun!

Hi Kathy,
I just recently made my first shaker card using a gumball machine die set I had ordered awhile back. Had a good time with it except, I think next time, I will add an extra layer of foam tape to give it a little more space to shake in. I have been looking for a camera to make one with, but can’t seem to find a large enough stamp or die set to use. Do you know of any which are available on the market today?
Avra Williams says

Hi, No I have never made a shaker card, but have always wanted to, I have a bunch of You tube videos flagged in my account for when I get the nerve up. I just actually purchased May’s buttons from her 28 Lilac Lane collection, I am a big fan of hers. I would love to be able to try her other products out, this would be a great giveaway to win for me or anyone, Good luck to ALL and happy coloring.

Traci Starkweather says
Hi Kathy!
I’m so happy you had a special visit with your daughter!
I love this card! 2 Copics used and it looks so alive and colorful! I think i could color these special large “flowers,”
So, did you say in the video it was the actual die-cut you glued over the colored flowers?! I loved the sentiment, too. So many uses for it! I am still just floored with how well your rag/blender solution works on Copic backgrounds! It has made a big difference to the better with my cards! Do you have a special tip when using colored pencils for the background? I hate to have the lines show!
I love bling! If something adds sparkle, an iridescent look, movement, or extra pizazz…I’ll need to add some on my cards, scrapbook pages and bookmarks!
Sequins has become one of my 2 favorite embellishments from seeing you use them so lovingly on your cards. My other is pearls. I color them with Copics to fit the feel of the card.
I have made 1 shaker card so far! I really personally prefer to glue them to my cards or scrapbook pages. Tell you what, if I am fortunate enough to be chosen to receive some of these lovely 28 Lilac Lane sequins, I will promise to make 1 shaker card for each color I receive! I know winner’s are chosen randonly…I am just very excited about this opportunity!
Thank you for continuing to share your skills with us Kathy! You’re the best!
He-IS-Able!
