Hello Friends. Welcome to DAY ONE of the 11th coloring challenge, “The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge” OMG I can’t believe it’s DAY ONE!!! YIPEEE!! I am so excited you are here and that so many of you are taking the challenge again! Thank YOU and thank you all for your comments, enthusiasm and for taking the challenge!!!! If you are new this go around or have been watching from the side lines and decided to jump in I am so proud of you for taking some “me” time.
If this is your first time don’t be hard on yourself and jump in when time permits. If you have any questions about the coloring challenge you can refer to this post . If you want to get my posts in your mailbox you can sign up here or subscribe to my videos here.
For Day 1. I like to try and do something special for ya all but, I have been on the run and am continuing to run hahaha. Today I am in AZ taking The Copic Boot Camp with the all mighty Jennifer Dove. I am sure my head will be swimming with tips.
This beautiful stamp set called, “Winter Wear” won’t be released until November 9th but, I was able to score special permission from Angie at Concord & 9th. Whew! I tell ya it’s a fun one to color and I can’t wait to color the other one. The ink is from Ink On Three and I love the soft color for no line coloring.
Before I headed to AZ I had to go to Florida for one night to help my hubby with some business. I started coloring this sweet babe on the airplane.
If you don’t own any markers I think that there are three that everyone should own. I use E50, RV10 and “0” all the time! If you love your colored pencils you will thank me. Using a few markers to lay down a layer of color first will save you lots of time in the end. (the pencils you see are these they are lightweight and great to travel with)
(I am aware that not everyone has a nice stash of alcohol markers or some of you are on the fence about making that kind of investment. Either way there are other alternatives. Believe it or not you can achieve shading & depth on your images with Sharpie markers or Bic markers. During my 10th coloring challenge I shared this … coloring is with Bic & Sharpie markers. I used one Copic marker to see if how it works with the other brands and the Copic marker was compatible with what I was using for the pink leaves.
First I have to point out that I forgot to put my pencil sharpener in my carry on and I won’t let that happen again. These tips might look sharp but, they are not to me and I was going nuts! You might ask what my favorite colored pencil is and I will tell you every time that it’s “a sharp pencil” and I truly believe that.
Can you see what adding just a hint of color on the cheeks does? How it warms up her face easily? It’s so easy it’s crazy! Light strokes will be your best friend.
Since this is the first day I want to make mention of something that I think is very important … our posture! When coloring take pause and think if you can lift your gaze and straighten you back. Using a clip board helps you prop up your project so you aren’t bending over (you can prop the clip board on a stack of books). I take this clip board on the plane with me and it saves my neck in a good way! If you want something for your desk I found this on eBay many years ago & it’s a good size.
Another thing !!! I always talk about “color plucking” (randomly picking colors you don’t normally use to come up with new color combinations while you are traveling) All these colors I took on the plane are what Jennifer Dove wanted us to bring to class. Even though I color pluck these colors were totally different for me and I was challenged. I have never used Y21, E33, V15 & BV25 on hair EVER but, I love the combo. That’s why color plucking really is a thing! Please try it.
Another essential and must have is a super duper fine tip maker a Copic multiliner 0.03! It’s perfect for making little eyelash lines or eyelashes, eyebrows or teeny tiny highlights coloring in the little tiny nooks and crannies that I always talk about. Can you spot the teeny areas that I used the marker?
(this marker has a metal barrel, is refillable and the tiny tip is replaceable. the ones below are plastic and are NOT refillable hence less money)
If you are using a “fade out” ink to achieve that “no line coloring” look I suggest for you to trace over part of the image that you could loose sight of like the hair. Once I start adding color it’s hard to see where the lines are. I like to use a 0.03 in sepia (brown) and I own one in grey too. I do want them in every color! Tell that to Santa Clause lol.
During my Road Trip I have discovered that lots of crafters use the 80 lb paper and I have found that the 110lb paper works better for me and I don’t get those blurry lines or bleeding of ink. (If that happens to you try a heat gun in between colors)
Since so many of you have taken the challenge before I encourage you to stretch yourself and create some art with your coloring. Use a beautiful background stamp, a coloring book page or stamp a bunch of flowers to create a background like I did in this post. Even if it’s takes a week you will be happy to see your art come together before your eyes. A trip to the store for some inexpensive frames gives your work even more importance. Adding art like this would be great on a collage wall for everyone to see your beautiful work.
Ok with all that said ….. On to your coloring and I can not wait to see what you all are coloring. Woo Hoo!!
There are 3 ways to share what you are coloring. If you want to join a community of coloring enthusiasts I recommend FaceBook or Instagram. Be sure to tag me and use the hashtag #thedailymarker30day. Kids & young adults use #thedailymarker30daykids.

Henriëtte says
Great colouring start Kathy, love the images and the haircolour of the girl.
In your post you are talking about the 3 Copic colours that is a “must have” for colouring with pencils. I hope that you will tell more about that in a post or ( better) show it in a video why they are so helpfull.
Take care on the road ( in your case I think more of an airplane), see you on the next post.
Kathy Racoosin says
Thank you so much, Henriette! Coloring hair is fun for me.
I find these three colors are my “go to” colors for putting down a layer of color on the paper before adding more color; whether it is other Copic marker colors or colored pencils (or both). I really like these three for a base color. I probably use these three colors more than any other Copic colors. Just my opinion 🙂
Nora says
You are one busy lady!! Thanks for all the Copic advice. I have a ton but could have used this when I was starting out. I also love the way you colored those images. So FUN!! I also have never heard of color plucking. That sounds scary!! It might be freeing, though. Might have to give it a try.
Kathy Racoosin says
You are most welcome, Nora! I hope you try the color plucking; I do find it very freeing. Thank you for your sweet comment; I appreciate your kindness. Have fun with it 🙂

Okay, today I did plenty of coloring. My mom went to therapy for her shoulder & she was there for almost an hour & 1/2, 2 hours. She had lots of paper work to do & they gave her exercises & did some exercises & heat on her. I did a lot of coloring & now I just have to make them into cards. I swear, people are going to get the prettiest, most creative, colorful cards for Christmas this year. My cards last year were good but these might just better. God gave me a talent & boy, am I using it! Thank you Lord!
I am so glad the coloring challenge is back! I love it & I love your coloring! I can’t wait to post things that I did & for you to see them. Thank you for doing the coloring challenge again & I am going to be a willing participant. Tomorrow my mom goes to the chiropractor so I will be doing more coloring. You should see my Christmas lighthouse!
Cindy C. says
Oh how fun, just found out that the coloring challenge is back!! Looking forward to play along!

I literally cannot believe I made it to day 20! I’m so happy to be sharing with this community and have learned so much already and used stamps I never used formerly because they were “coloring” stamps. This is such a great challenge. Thank you so much Kathy for all of your hard work in organizing and commenting. Hugs, Autumn
